The show begins with Lynn and the Roots as we head to 15th Annual Bridge City Music Festival on the banks of the River Mozelle.

PLAYWRIGHT & COMPOSER’S NOTE

Kennen Butler

First thing you should know is that, selfishly, Bridge City is an outcome I want to see in this life. People who look like me on stage. Joy. The music. Hope. The power of community. Love as an act of service.

My hope and prayer is for you to enjoy yourself for minute. Afterwards, when the lights come on and you're on your way to wherever life takes you, that you are moved to do something. Invest in empathy. Mentor. Volunteer. Be kind. Love is an act of service. A big laugh can be the thing you need to see clearer.

Finally, I dedicate this piece to my Grandmother, Linda. My root and my Lynn. She embodied and taught me love as an act of service, encouraged and poured into me.

Ya’ll, I hope Bridge City brings you whatever it is that you are needing when you see it.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Matthew David Gellin

Tonight’s bare stage is intentional. We wanted the story, the music, and the people onstage to carry the full weight of this experience.

In the tradition of Griot storytelling—where stories hold culture and community—we’re reminded that the Black experience doesn’t require physical scenery to be valid or whole.

As a non-Black director working with a multi-racial cast, my role is to facilitate—not impose—and to create space for this story to be told with honesty and care.

Without a set, the scenes move fluidly, like the river at the center of this story. Through sound, light, and choreography rooted in Black history, we aim to center joy as something powerful and present.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Bridge City takes place on the ancestral lands of Indigenous peoples who have long stewarded this region. We recognize the Osage Nation, Myaamia Nation, Shawandasse Tula, Kaskaskia, and the Mosopelea and Ofo cultures, whose connection to this land continues today.

We acknowledge the history of displacement and the ongoing impact of colonization, and we honor the enduring presence, culture, and sovereignty of Indigenous communities.
